Hello and goodbye

Internet is connected! Finally. We're pretty much settled into the new house and just waiting for our boxes from the UK to arrive at the end of the month. Where it's all going to go I'm not sure.

I've decided it's time to end this blog seeing as how we're not going anywhere anytime soon. But as this is basically Lillian's baby book, and it's nice to have that record, I've started a new Lillian focused blog here and copied across all the Lillian posts from this one. I'll also keep putting photos on flickr.

So thanks for reading along over the last few years. It's been fun and maybe we'll go somewhere again someday!

Quick update

Just a quick update using the free public wireless on Beaumont St while we enjoy a yummy Sunday brunch. We are in the new house and mostly unpacked but won't have internet access for another couple of weeks. So if I am ignoring emails that is why.

5 days to go

We're on the home stretch now! Our 5 big boxes were picked up for shipping last Tuesday and are on their way across the seas to be reunited with us in 7-14 weeks. Dave finished work last Thursday and is enjoying calling himself a Stay At Home Dad, for the next few weeks anyway. We've had a couple of farewells and some more to come. Tomorrow is our last Monday baby group so I'll take the camera and get some photos of Lillian with her friends. Dave's going to come along and see what it is we've been getting up to there all this time.

Still left to do:
- Continue getting rid of stuff. We've donated a fair bit to the charity shop around the corner and offered up a fair bit on freecycle with more to come.
- Clean. Including the carpets and couch to remove all the little baby spit-up marks.
- Have a pedicure. Dave gave me a voucher for Christmas and I thought I'd better use it before we leave!
- Pack.
- Survive over 30 hours of travelling.

There will probably not be any further updates here for a while. See you on the other side!

Wish granted

Lillian slept from 7:30pm to 6:15am last night!! She needed to be resettled at 8pm and 11pm but Dave handled these and no feeding required! Fantastic anniversary present.

(And she's now been asleep for an hour and a half on her morning nap. Yay!)

Groundhog month

It feels like we're back at the beginning of February. Lillian has a cold, I have a cold, Lillian is teething, sleep is crappy (7.5 hrs last night. Not all at once.)

It's our 4th wedding anniversary today and I'm hoping Lillian's present is a better night's sleep. I'm going to go and look at our photos again and cheer up!

Berlin

There are now only four weeks until we fly back to Australia so last weekend we took off on our final European jaunt. We were in Berlin from Friday to Tuesday where we met up with Elizabeth and Roger. It was a great weekend which I will attempt to now summarise while Lillian naps.

Firstly, a bit about travelling with Lillian:
She did really well! She was great on both flights (slept for one was awake and happy for the return) and handled the full days of sight seeing with no problems. We actually forgot to pack her stroller but luckily had the connecta carrier so we took it in turns of carrying her and the day pack. She napped on the go in the carrier with a minimum of fuss and it was actually quite nice not to have to wrangle the stroller on public transport or in restaurants. All the restaurants we went to (except one quick lunch) had a high chair and she quite enjoyed sitting at the table and joining in the meal or drinking from her sippy cup.

A note about baby change rooms - the Novotel hotel lobby on Strasse des 17 Juni has a great baby change station in the disabled toilet. It was even equipped with nappies and wipes and was very clean. They didn't seem to mind us walking in off the street to feed Lil in the lounge and change her. I would have said this was the best baby change room we used but the baggage reclaim hall at Glasgow airport narrowly beat it. They had a mobile for the baby to look at while being changed, toys to play with and a comfortable nursing chair with a foot stool. Lil hates having her nappy changed in public places but tolerated both of these rooms!

Where we stayed:
We stayed in apartments in this converted brewery building. Elizabeth and Roger were on one side of the courtyard and we were opposite so we could wave across at each other. This was in a pretty handy location not too far to walk in to the central area or handy to the train. The apartments themselves were comfortable.

Josty Brewery

Some of the places we ate at:
Maxwell - this was in the same brewery building as the apartments and we went here for Dave's birthday dinner. (Which, by the way, everyone including Dave forgot until we saw a poster advertising something on his birthday which, oh!, is today.) This was probably the fanciest place we ate (we later saw it in a book called Cool Restaurants in Berlin) but they were great and didn't mind the baby at all and the food was delicious.

KaDeWe - Europe's largest department store! It has a huge food hall on the top floor and we had lunch here on Saturday.

Schwarzwaldstuben -  this was not far from the apartments and recommended by the guide book. We went here for dinner with Elizabeth and Roger and also lunch on our final day. Yummy German food.

Oderquelle -  This was in the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood and we ate here on our final night as it was recommended by the guidebook which said it was impossible to get a table after 8pm without a reservation. We rocked up with Lil just before 6pm and most of the tables were already reserved but they found a spot for us. Really good German food and Dave finally got his sausages and sauerkraut.

Sight-seeing:
Brandenburg Gate

Brandenburg Gate

Reichstag dome - tip: turn up with a baby and you get to jump the queue!

dome

East Side Gallery - it's a bit disappointing that the graffiti has so much graffiti on it but still very interesting to see.
Berlin Wall

Pergamon Museum

We also did a lot of just walking around the city. On our final afternoon Dave and Lil and I went for a walk around the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood. This place has the highest birthrate in Germany and it was so bizarre! Everyone had a baby with them either on a bike, in a carrier or in a pram. We blended right in and were even asked for directions.

So that was our trip to Berlin! A lovely final fling in Europe, at least for the time being. All photos here.

Before I go, a quick Lillian update:
- She now has four teeth! The top two appeared (after many sleep interrupted nights) last week.
- She can now sit up by herself from lying on her stomach.
- Commando crawling is still her preferred method but she does try her knees out every now and then.
- She has started pulling herself up to standing and I can no longer turn my back for a second or I soon hear a thud followed by a waah!
- She says mumumum and bububub, but as hard as we try still no dadadad.

Lil in the apartment

A few things

- Lillian now waves if you wave to her.
- She has twice crawled to the bath by herself. She LOVES the bath and knows when it's time.
- She's still doing the commando style crawling but every now and then stops and goes up on her knees and rocks a bit and then collapses and continues on her tummy. I don't think it will be long till she's on her knees.
- She's still snotty but sleeping MUCH better the last few nights including one night of 8pm to 8am with only one brief wake-up at 8:30pm!!! Unprecedented.
- We're all a bit snotty and Lil cries loudly every time Dave blows his nose. She doesn't cry when I blow mine.
- Dave was away last night on a work trip and Lillian did a double-take when he walked in tonight and was very excited to see him.
- I was pretty pleased too.

Edinburgh

Today we had what will probably be our final visit to Edinburgh, at least for the foreseeable future. No photos were taken of the occasion but the weather was pretty similar to our first visit nearly three years ago:

Pict0106

We went down to put in Lillian's Australian passport application, which had to be done in person, but also took the chance to have a yummy lunch at Urban Angel. Thanks to Katherine for the recommendation! We shared a selection of six delicious tapas. Lillian especially liked the lime and coriander hummus with flat bread.

Lillian is still sick and still not sleeping well but we did get a six hour stretch last night which was a welcome relief and she napped really well in the car today in both directions. Dave now has the same cold and I have the beginnings of it so it's all a bit miserable here at the moment.

First cold

Poor Lillian is suffering from her first cold. Which means we are suffering from lack of sleep. She sounds so miserable and snotty and is waking every 1-2 hours overnight. She's also having trouble napping so today we took her out in the car in the hopes that the more upright position of the car seat would help her sleep. It seemed to work and she slept for an hour and twenty minutes while we drove to Montrose and back with a couple of scenic diversions.

I'm being called for bath removal duty so fingers crossed tonight is a bit better for all of us!

PS. Happy Birthday Dad!

What was that I said about crawling earlier?
